Originally from Australia, the eucalyptus is a tree species that has adapted very well to the soil and climate of Brazil. Because of its natural characteristics, and thanks to major investments in research, the eucalyptus is a versatile tree, with extensive applications in the industrial sector, including the segment of specialty cellulose, for which Bahia Specialty Cellulose is an international benchmark.
In Brazil, the average harvest age for eucalyptus is seven years after planting, when it reaches nearly 35 meters in height. In other parts of the world, it may require more than 25 years to reach the same harvest point.
On the basis of intensive surveys, the company selects the specimens most suitable for dissolving wood pulp manufacturing, which will generate the seedlings that will comprise the crop of eucalyptus trees. Before receiving the seedlings, the land undergoes a special process of preparation intended to provide the plants with ideal conditions for growth. The plantings are carried out and tended to with an eye to maintaining environmental quality, including attention to suppressing harmful weeds, pests and diseases. The harvest of the wood takes place when the trees are nearly seven years old. The wood is taken from the plantations to the mill, where it will be used as raw material for the production of dissolving wood pulp.
